Your Identity Is Your Real Income Ceiling - Not Your Strategy
You Don’t Need a New Plan. You Need a New Identity.
If you’ve tried every strategy and still hit the same ceiling, the problem was never the plan. Here’s why your identity sets your income ceiling - and what changed the moment we saw ourselves differently.
Most people think if they just find the right strategy, the results will finally show up. I want to gently challenge that - because JP and I collected plenty of good strategies before we ever understood the thing that was actually holding us back.
The Belief That Keeps High Effort Producing Low Results
If you’ve tried course after course, plan after plan, and you’re still hitting the same invisible ceiling, you’ve probably landed on one of these:
We just haven’t found the right strategy yet, so you keep searching for a better plan.
We need more resources before this can really work, so you wait for conditions to improve.
Maybe we’re just not the kind of people this works for, so you quietly lower what you expect.
Here’s what I want you to hear clearly: none of those are actually the problem. The ceiling isn’t your strategy. It’s your self-image - the quiet, unexamined picture you carry of who you are and what someone “like you” gets to do.
Your income doesn’t grow past your identity. It grows up to it — and then it stops, no matter how good the plan is.
What Proverbs 23:7 Actually Says
That’s not a self-help slogan borrowed by scripture - scripture said it first. The self-image you carry in your heart isn’t just a feeling. It’s operational. It quietly decides which opportunities you pursue, which ones you talk yourself out of, and which ones you never even let yourself see.
What 2 Corinthians 5:17 Actually Means Here
This verse is often taught as a spiritual truth and left there. But it’s also a practical one. If your identity has genuinely been made new, then the old self-image - the one that quietly capped what you believed you were allowed to build - was never supposed to be the final word on your ceiling either.
The Moment It Became Personal
A few years into our real estate business, JP and I sat across from a loan officer to sign our first commercial loan on a small apartment building. Partway through the paperwork, she looked up and casually said, casually, “So, as business owners, you’ll want to…” and kept talking.
I didn’t hear another word for a few seconds. Business owners. That phrase landed strangely, like it belonged to someone else. In my head, we were still “the teachers who flip houses on the side” - a much smaller identity than the one sitting across from her that day.
Looking back, I can see exactly how that smaller self-image had been quietly running our decisions. We’d passed on bigger deals before that day - not because the numbers didn’t work, but because some part of us didn’t believe people like us did deals that size. The strategy had been available the whole time. The identity hadn’t caught up to it yet.
What This Means for Your Family
If you’ve tried strategy after strategy and keep landing in the same place, it might be worth asking a different question than “what should we do next.” Ask instead: who do we actually believe we are - and is that the ceiling we’ve been running into the whole time?
What would you pursue this year if you already believed you were the kind of person who gets to build it?
